The sapwood
of the Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is thin with a light yellow
tinge. The heartwood varies in colour from light
straw to pinkish red to deep, rich brown. The wood is straight-grained
and non-porous. It has a distinctive aroma.
Uses:
Weather resistant and highly resistant to decay, Western Red Cedar is
ideally suited for exterior applications where durability and
dimensional stability is required.
Products:
Boards, cutstock, wall paneling, exterior siding, decking, trim, doors
and door components, window components, outdoor furniture, garden
structures, fencing, housing components, veneer, poles, posts, sashes.
Transco produces top quality tongue and groove cedar decking.
Technical
Specifications:
This wood is one of the lightest in weight of all the commercially
important coniferous species - a softwood of moderate strength but with
excellent weather-resistant properties. The heartwood, which contains
large amounts of extractives, is highly resistant to decay.
Western Red Cedar dries readily with little shrinkage and exhibits
exceptional dimensional stability in service. It has excellent working
qualities and machines to a smooth, satiny finish. Completely
non-resinous, it has good gluing properties, has low to moderate nail
and screw holding ability, and takes paints and stains well.
Yellow
Cedar:
The Yellow Cedar (Chamaecyparis Nootkatensis) is a tough, solid and
very durable species that is noted for its hardness and slow growth.
Yellow Cedar has a distinctive and uniform yellow colour. The narrow
band of sapwood is very similar in colour to the heartwood. The wood is
fine textured and straight grained.
Yellow Cedar’s natural extractives make it a decay resistant
wood and aromatic when cut.
Uses:
Yellow Cedar is well-suited for flooring and bridge decking because of
its strength, hardness and wearing properties. It is resistant to
decay, corrosion and weather which makes it a regular choice for
industrial uses like flumes, chemical containers, horse stables, floors
or outdoor seating in sports facilities. It is used extensively for
boat building, sauna manufacturing, fine cabinetry and interior and
exterior millwork.
Products:
Cut stock, premium quality doors and windows, decorative paneling,
joinery, boat building, bridge decking, flooring, hand carvings,
musical instruments and veneers.
Technical
Specifications:
Yellow Cedar exhibits notable durability and longevity, being resistant
to decay, insect attack and, in salt water (ocean) applications, to
marine borers. It is considerably harder than most commercially
available evergreen and hardwood species and has excellent strength and
wearing properties as well as good impact resistance.
Yellow Cedar seasons well, remains stable and shows little shrinkage.
It works easily with hand or machine tools to a smooth surface finish
and appearance. It takes and holds nails and screws without splitting
and can be glued satisfactorily.
